Talk about it Tuesday 30/6/15

On Tuesday afternoons I go out to meet some lovely people and have a chat, cup of tea and quite often we have CAKE  They’re a friendly bunch, men and women, all mixed ages, and sometimes we really have a laugh.

Sounds fun doesn’t it, but what would you say if I told you it was a Cancer Support Centre and I’m a volunteer listener, now fun probably isn’t the first thing you’d think of.

Cancer support centres are very positive places, a place to talk where people will listen. Often set up by an individual who has been affected by cancer and hasn’t found the support they needed where they live.

Friendly staff and volunteers are available to listen with a cuppa and a smile. You can choose to get involved, or just drop in when you feel like a friendly chat and most services are completely free of charge.

We have lots of volunteers, many people who visit the centre for support often return to offer their help in some way. I think people return to show their support and thanks for ‘being there’ at a time when everything looked bleak.

Many support centres are self funded and rely on fundraising and grant applications.  Volunteers are the backbone of these organisations.

If you have time and there’s a cause or organisation that is close to your heart, why don’t you think about volunteering. An afternoon a week is all you need, and It’s a great way to gain confidence if you’re looking to go back to work.

Why don’t you tell us what you’ve been up to,

join in Talk about it Tuesday

Aw Lorraine I bet you put a smile on so many peoples faces just taking the time to listen to them. I have never volunteered but its something I will definitely think about in the future. Its such a selfless thing to do and you must be proud you are helping people each week. Do you volunteer in the cancer centre in our home town ? xx

I think people who volunteer are amazing. I am so grateful to the ladies who helped get Mario swimming. One day when I have time, I will do it too.
I wish my mum had somewhere to go to talk about my Dad’s cancer but I think she is too old school to accept the help. I have tried!

What a great thing you are doing and so selfless – an excellent use of your time that I am sure puts a lot of things into perspective! I love people that can laugh and see the funny side of things despite hardships.

Ive been wondering about volunteering one day a week in september when the kids are in school ?! x

What a wonderful group! And you should never underestimate the power of a good chat, a brew and a slice of cake… offloading your thoughts to someone who wants to listen is a powerful thing x

I love volunteering. During Uni I volunteered a lot and after moving in UK I volunteered at a dog charity, walking the dogs and other things for a couple of years. It was so rewarding. I would love to get involved in another charity, but at the moment I don’t have the time.
